New Logistics Horizons: Russia and Iran Discussed Maritime Transport Routes

A discussion as part of efforts to strengthen economic and trade ties between Russia and the Islamic Republic of Iran was held at the Iranian Trade House in Astrakhan. Alexander Kim, Director General of the Management Company of Special Economic Zone Lotus, and Andrey Nalimov, Deputy Director General, met with Hadi Tizhoush Taban, President of the Iran-Russia Joint Chamber of Commerce and President of the Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture of Gilan Province. The main topic of the negotiations was the development of logistics infrastructure and effective cooperation between the two countries.

During the talks, the participants emphasized the importance of utilizing maritime transport routes to improve the quality of cargo transportation and reduce costs. The use of such routes can significantly enhance the quality of cargo shipments and lower logistics expenses. Thus, the free trade zone agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and Iran, which came into force in May 2025, has opened new horizons for trade by eliminating duties on 80% of Iranian goods exported to Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.

Hadi Tizhoush Taban highlighted the successful experience of production localization already achieved by Rosa LLC – a company that is part of the large Iranian holding Golrang Industrial Group. He further proposed developing coordination with the Mazandaran Free Economic Zone, which serves as an important logistics and production hub on the territory of Iran.

Alexander Kim, Director General of SEZ Lotus JSC, presented plans for organizing the transportation of perishable goods, cement, and other cargo from Iran. He emphasized the importance of interaction with Iranian regulatory authorities to simplify procedures and enhance the overall level of cooperation between Russian and Iranian companies.

In addition, a proposal was made to establish a single window system in Russia in cooperation with the Astrakhan Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This will help businesses streamline customs procedures and optimize logistics. A similar project is also planned to be implemented in Iran with the support of the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Further discussion of this issue will take place at a meeting of the International Council for Business Cooperation of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of the Caspian Region “Business Caspian”, which will be held in Tehran this year. This meeting promises to become an important step towards strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation between Russia and Iran.
